Kaiserlicher Stall

The Kaiserlicher Stall is a former stable structure in the Mosern area of Grundlsee, Ausseerland, in the Styrian district of Liezen.

A fish master’s home was documented in 1568 near the beginning of the lake on the front Clausen. The forester’s home in Mosern 19 is still standing and was repaired a few years ago by the owner, the Austrian Federal Forestry Service. This fish master’s mansion had a barn and a riding stable, in addition to green and meadows. The so-called Imperial Stable is one of them. Its name is evocative of the “Imperial High Forest era” when the Fischmeistergut was still in operation.

A legal document from 1787, “The Vischmeister am Crunglsee hat zwo khuefuehr,” enabled the Fischmeister to keep two cows. The forest officials were also alerted about this intrusion. The foresters from the Grundlsee’s north and south sides might each maintain a cow in the imperial stable. The hay was kept on the wooden top floor.

The entire land was integrated into the Federal Treasury in 1928 and became the property of the German Reich’s Reich Forest Administration in 1941. It was restored to the Republic of Austria in 1947, which transferred it on to the Austrian Federal Forests in 1952. Since then, the previous stable has been used as a storage room and payment room for the woodcutters rather than a stable.

The Austrian Federal Forests sold the land, including the Imperial Stables, to the town of Grundlsee in 1987. The Grundlsee cultural working group has rented the stable since 1992 and uses it for various exhibitions throughout the summer months. Initially, just one room could be utilized, but in 1995, two more rooms were converted into exhibition spaces for the exhibition “The Vienna Burgtheater am Grundlsee.” The two hardwood top floors have been totally open for exhibits since 1996. The working group uses the brick ground level as a work and storage area.
