Kaiserbründl Herrensauna – Gay Sauna

Restaurant, bar, lounge, spa with various saunas, massage and different relaxation rooms. The Kaiserbründl is an old Turkish bath that opened its doors for the first time in 1889. It is located in the historic part of the city – a few steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, right next to the Franciscan monastery. And that alone makes you want to! Even Archduke Ludwig Viktor made it a habit to appear here twice a week in the company of his adjutant. “And I wasn’t so wrong; because one fine day there really was a big scandal, even a scuffle in the bathhouse. It was said that the Archduke had been slapped in the face and had to flee.” Writes Princess Nora Fugger in “In the Splendour of the Imperial Era.” The KAISERBRÜNDL has an impressive history that spans several centuries.

The Kaiserbründl (formerly Centralbad) has always been considered the oldest and most distinguished bathing establishment in Vienna. The unusually deep and productive house well was already used in Roman times for the bridgehead castle located here (coin finds of the emperors Heliogabal and Alexander Serverus). The complex, then called “Weihenpurgkh”, was a fortified suburb of Vienna in its own right until 1156.

In the years 1887 – 1891 the building was rebuilt into its present form by the well-known Viennese architect and master builder Anton Honus. After a period of stagnation in the wake of the world wars, the Kaiserbründl is now, on the threshold of the third millennium of its existence, experiencing a new boom, which has manifested itself in extensive renovations and expansions.
