Kaffee Alt Wien

Kaffee Alt Wien is a traditional Viennese café situated at Bäckerstraße 9 in the Innere Stadt, the first district of Vienna, Austria. Leopold Hawelka and his wife Josefine established it in 1936, the day after their wedding. They operated the café until 1939, when they relocated to Dorotheergasse and established the renowned Café Hawelka.

Nowadays, the Alt Wien is no longer considered one of Vienna’s chic coffee houses. Instead, it has a smoky and gloomy atmosphere, and its clientele often consists of eccentric individuals. In 1976, a significant event occurred at the café involving the Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein. Since the 1980s, Kaffee Alt Wien has transformed into a popular night café.
