The Jägersee, formerly known as Eilsee, is a man-made lake located in Salzburg. It is situated at the head of the Kleinarler valley within the municipality of Kleinarl. It is situated at an altitude of 1099 meters in the Radstädter Tauern. The weir was constructed no later than the 17th century, taking advantage of a natural threshold created by the mudflow cones of the Maureck and Rossfeldgraben on the left bank, as well as the Jägergraben on the right bank. Similar to the larger Tappenkarsee, the Jägersee is also fed by the Kleinarlbach, allowing it to be continuously supplied with fresh water.
The Jägerhaus am See, previously named am Eil, was constructed in 1718 under the patronage of the Archbishops of Salzburg. The Nesselrode family has privately owned the property since the 20th century and they operate a hunting and fishing business on the premises.
The Jägersee is a popular destination due to its location in the landscape protection area (LSG18).The Jägersee can be easily accessed by car or public transport. Additionally, there is a well-developed footpath and cycle path from Kleinarl, which is just a few kilometers away from the valley, making it convenient to reach the Jägersee from there. There is a path around the lake that is suitable for strollers. The lake features a beautiful lake terrace and offers rowing boat rentals.
Families and hikers have the opportunity to embark on the “2-lake hike” from the Jägersee to the Tappenkarsee. The estimated walking time from the Jägersee is approximately 3 hours, while it takes around 2 hours from the Schwabalm car park. During the winter season, there is a trail that takes you from Wagrain to the Jägersee. The path around the lake is also usable during winter.
Arctic char from the Tappenkarsee were introduced into the lake.
The Jägersee’s outflow powers a small power plant that was constructed in 1979. The power plant has a bottleneck capacity of 77.2 kW and an annual standard energy capacity of 460 MWh.
