Innerberger Stadel

The Innerberger Stadel, located at Steyrer Grünmarkt 26, is a working Renaissance structure with magnificent sgraffito painting from 1612/13.The building was named after Innerberg’s principal trade union, which bought it in 1628.It presently houses the Steyr City Museum and the Steyrer Kripperl.

The moat-roofed building is linked to the neighbouring Neutor and has a gable end facing the Grünmarkt. The lowest floor is dominated by vaults (partially stuccoed), whilst the above two floors are dominated by huge supporting components with tram ceilings (wooden beam ceilings).

Just over the wide entry gate, a painting showing a scenario from Joseph’s story (Gen 42, ELB EU) corresponds to the building’s usage as a food store, with the year 1612 above it. The second level is ornamented with a haloed double-headed eagle bearing the coat of arms of the iron trade union. Two side entrances (Steyrer Kripperl and Museum of the City of Steyr) open to the left and right of the main gate on the ground level, as do two large barred windows on the outside to the right and left. Each of the two upper floors has six smaller, barred windows, as well as a double gable below four and above two.An iron gargoyle protrudes from the moat between the two roofs.Sgraffiti, or scratch plaster artwork, decorates the window and door openings.

The citizens’ fountain on the plaza in front of the barn was built between 1977 and 1979.The design was designed by Maximilian Stockenhuber (Linz).
