Hügelpark

Hügelpark is a park in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing; the park is in the area of Unter-St.-Veit.

The park, which is surrounded by villas and is located south of Hietzinger Hauptstraße between Kupelwiesergasse, Fichtnergasse, Larochegasse, and Stoesslgasse, is named for natural scientist Carl von Hügel (1795-1870), who has a bust in the park since 1901.There was once a Biedermeier hill garden in the territory of today’s park from 1824, which belonged to Carl von Hügel’s residence (” Hill Villa “) north of Hietzinger Hauptstraße (until 1894 here St. Veiter Gasse ).

Unter-St.-Veit, like many other suburbs, was integrated into the city of Vienna in 1892 and formed part of the new 13th district.The ground south of Hietzinger Hauptstraße belonging to the villa was parceled out in 1894 by real estate agent Julius Frankl, who had a park built by garden architect Gustav Swenson set out in the centre of the ensuing cottage-like construction.In 1903, Frankl gave the park to the city government, which renovated its infrastructure and renamed it Hügelpark.

The park contains a space of 8200 m2, a playground, and the municipal Andersen kindergarten, which opened in 1955.Every year on a Sunday in September since 1987, the Hügel Park Festival has taken place.

The mansion erected by Adolf Loos in 1918/1919 at number 28 on Kupelwiesergasse, which borders the park to the north, is known in architectural references as Haus Strasser.The Fichtnergasse high school, which borders the park to the east, is located in the block north of the park at No. 15, and its graduates include the Federal President until 2016, Heinz Fischer, and quantum scientist Anton Zeilinger.Until his death in 1981, the actor Rudolf Prack resided in Stoesslgasse 15 (corner of Kupelwiesergasse) west of the park.
