Holzmeister Alm

Holzmeister Alm, is a charming alpine hut near the Hinterer Gosausee, the last of the three Gosau lakes. The hut is situated at an altitude of 1,164 meters, at the end of the Gosautal valley, and offers a stunning view of the Dachstein glacier and the surrounding peaks.

The Holzmeister Alm is only accessible by foot, as there is no motor traffic in the area. You can reach it in about 90 minutes from the Vorderer Gosausee, the first and largest of the Gosau lakes, where you can park your car or take a bus from the nearby village of Gosau. The hike to the hut is easy and scenic, following a gravel path along the shore of the Vorderer Gosausee and then through a forest and a meadow. Along the way, you can admire the crystal-clear water of the lakes, the colorful flowers and plants, and the wildlife, such as birds, butterflies, and marmots.

The Holzmeister Alm is open from June to September, depending on the weather conditions. The hut is run by Lisa, the friendly and hospitable hostess, who welcomes her guests with a smile and a warm greeting. Lisa prepares delicious local specialties, such as Kaiserschmarrn (a fluffy pancake with raisins and powdered sugar), Knödel (dumplings with cheese or meat), and Kaspressknödel (fried cheese dumplings), as well as soups, salads, and snacks. You can also enjoy a variety of drinks, such as coffee, tea, beer, wine, and schnapps, as well as homemade juices and syrups. The hut has a cozy interior with wooden furniture and decorations, as well as a spacious terrace where you can sit and enjoy the sun and the fresh air.

The Holzmeister Alm is a great place to rest and recharge after a hike or a bike ride in the area. You can also stay overnight at the hut, as it has a dormitory with 20 beds and a shared bathroom. The hut is a good base for exploring the nearby attractions, such as the Adamek hut, a mountain refuge at 2,196 meters, or the Dachstein West ski resort, which offers slopes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. You can also visit the Gosaukamm cable car, which takes you to the Zwieselalm, a panoramic plateau with hiking trails and viewpoints.
