Hofbräu Kaltenhausen

Since 1475, the Hofbräu in Kaltenhausen, Salzburg’s oldest brewery, has merged traditional beer formulas with inventive inventiveness and innovative brewing artistry. Specialty beers are very much the brewery’s heart and soul.

This restaurant was chosen as the “Preferred Salzburg Beer Culture Establishment” after a rigorous evaluation procedure.

Since its establishment in 1475 in the tranquil town of Kaltenhausen near Hallein, the Hofbräu has depended on a blend of traditional brewing procedures and inventive creativity. Here, centuries-old recipes are developed to create true beer gems with a zeitgeist, greatly boosting Salzburg’s beer culture.

Hofbräu Kaltenhausen’s specialty-beer factory, which began production in 2011, is a highlight. The brewery’s events program includes guided tours, training courses leading to the achievement of the “Beer Sommelier” credential, tastings at the Braugasthof, and presentations on future beer developments.

Visitors to the Cooperage Museum in Hofbräu Kaltenhausen can actually witness the centuries-old craftsmanship of the barrel builder. The history of barrel manufacturing is chronicled in the brewery’s own old workshop, which continued in operation until the 1970s. Cooperage equipment, calipers, carving tools, beer barrels, a hoop-bending machine, a furnace, guild plates, and a guild chest dated 1609 are among the items on exhibit. A master cooper displays the ancient barrel-making procedure in a short clip.
