Herrengasse

Herrengasse, formerly known as Bürgerstraße or Bürgergasse during the Middle Ages, is a baroque boulevard located in the heart of Graz. It serves as a prominent hub of public activity in the capital city of Styria. The bridge connects the main square to Am Eisernen Tor square, which is located near Jakominiplatz, the central hub for public transportation in Graz.It runs parallel to the Mur on the left side, approximately in a north-south direction. All tram lines in Graz pass through Herrengasse, which has been a pedestrian zone since November 1972. As a result, it is closed to individual traffic.

The Herrengasse area of today is an ancient settlement site where archaeological discoveries from the Hallstatt period have been found. The walled Jewish ghetto, mentioned in 1261, was located at the southern end of Herrengasse, approximately in the area where Mesnergasse is situated today. From 1457 to 1475, the Bürgerstrasse in Graz underwent a significant transformation. This street, originally inhabited by the esteemed citizens of the city, was renamed Herrengasse due to the increasing number of nobles who began to acquire properties in this area.
