Hallstatt Market Square

The market square in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt is without a doubt one of the most lovely sites in the area. Visitors from all over the world gather each year to the famed plaza, which is surrounded by attractive, small homes. Guests will find relaxing cafés, dining businesses, a popular bar with people of all ages, housing alternatives, and, of course, souvenir stores.

The majestic Holy Trinity monument, located in the centre of the plaza, was witness to one of Hallstatt’s most tragic incidents six years after its creation. On September 20th, 1750, a fire broke out in the “Keferbäcks” home, today known as Café Derbl, destroying a substantial amount of the square and leaving only ashes and rubble left.

Every year, the market square hosts a variety of events. During the spring season, the square holds the traditional Hallstatt Corpus Christi procession, which stretches to the lake if the weather permits. Throughout the summer, there are frequent performances by the Saline band, cultural events, and the important Hallstatt children’s celebration at the end of July. On December 8th, the Hallstatt Christmas Market offers a pleasant and festive environment that appeals to people of all ages and ethnicities. Its lovely atmosphere during Advent is especially renowned.
