Gstättengasse & Ursulinenplatz

The Gstättengasse is an alley in Salzburg’s left old town that connects the Bürgerspital and the Gstättentor to the extended Ursulinenplatz in front of the Klausentor.Anton-Neumayr-Platz is established at the intersection with Griesgasse at the old town end of Gstättengasse.

“Die Gstätten” is the only connection to the Müllner suburb and is located between the medieval fortifications Gstättentor and Klausentor.Since the early Middle Ages, the route there from the Left Old Town has been the most significant arterial road to the north and west.

from the inner and outer Stein and the inner Nonntal, the Gstättengasse region is perhaps Salzburg’s oldest suburb, having evolved rapidly from 1480 from individual barns and tiny isolated and primarily wooden buildings into a closed settlement along the Mönchsberg.

The earliest dwellings were known to have been built here about 1400, although bigger brick structures were only permitted until 1480.Until the end of the 16th century, the road was mostly built up on the mountainside.Craftsmen, particularly milliners, loden manufacturers, bakers, and locksmiths, lived and worked here.

Today, between the Salzach and the Rudolfskai/Müllner Hauptstraße street, there is still the so-called Red Cross car park and the Franz-Josef-Kai, which were won as a consequence of the Salzach laws in the 1860s.
