Goldgasse

The Goldgasse in Salzburg connects the Residenzplatz to the Alter Markt and is located in the center of the city’s historical area. This beautiful street was named for the goldsmiths and other craftspeople who once operated there.

A few centuries ago, the Goldgasse in Salzburg was a centre for the operations of several craftspeople. While the emphasis has switched in recent years to folk clothes, leather items, wines, and antiques, the Goldgasse has retained all of its historical allure.

The Goldgasse homes in Salzburg, most of which are 5 to 6 stories tall, have contributed to the character of the historical neighborhood. Walking down this lane, attentive pedestrians may come across some true works of art, such as house signs that beseech the saints for blessing and protection, such as a depiction of Mary’s coronation (No. 9 Goldgasse), Saints Florian and Sebastian (No. 16 Goldgasse), and even a replica of Altötting’s miraculous carving together with an angel’s head (No. 6 Goldgasse).

We would like to pay special attention to the Reitsamerhaus (No. 5 Goldgasse), a home that was first documented in 1424. In 1700, French trader Jean Fontaine acquired his first permission to serve coffee at this establishment. Later, this coffeehouse relocated to the Alter Markt, where it is now known as Café Tomaselli and continues to enchant its customers with delicious treats and a wide range of beverages.
