The Getreidegasse is the busy core of Salzburg’s Old Town, with its undeniable charm and Mozart’s Birthplace, making it an appealing destination for innumerable people from all over the world. Aside from an abundance of international fashion brands, the Getreidegasse fascinates passers-by with its classic inns and historically significant enterprises.
The style of the Getreidegasse buildings is distinguished by stunning doors and windows that gradually shrink from the first story above. Furthermore, the antique houses are frequently painted with significant dates in their history, the names of previous owners, and even the eye of God. Mozart’s Birthplace, located at No. 9 Getreidegasse, is another tourist attraction. In 1756, Salzburg’s famous wunderkind was born.
Above all, the Getreidegasse attracts visitors with its diverse array of multinational fashion chains, historic stores, and culinary options. Aside from jewelry, folkwear, fashionable accessories, antiques, leather goods, stationery, and perfume businesses, Getreidegasse also has grocery and deli stores. The ornate and often rather elaborate guild signs jutting from the building facades, well over pedestrians’ heads, are a particular attraction of this street. The Wieber shop on Getreidegasse is a classic metalworking establishment that still handcrafts these “advertising signs” among other things.
Getreidegasse runs parallel to, but one block away from, the Salzach river and is now part of the Old Town quarter’s extensive pedestrian zone. Trabegasse (derived from traben ‘to trot’) was first attested around 1150, when it ran from the medieval Salzburg trade center to the northwestern suburb of Mülln. Its name was modified multiple times until becoming the Getreidegasse. In the 14th century, the prince-archbishops granted residents staple privileges, and numerous major commercial establishments began to showcase their wares along the route. Getreidegasse thereafter became a popular home neighborhood for Salzburg patricians and governmental officials. Many buildings have beautiful hallways and courtyards.
In recent decades, a substantial number of old residential residences have been converted into commercial properties. While Getreidegasse is one of the city’s most prominent tourist attractions, the Salzburg municipal government has made various steps to preserve the street’s unique character.
