Georg Trakl Memorial Center

In 1973, a research and memorial site was built in the home of Georg Trakl, Salzburg’s most famous poet (1887-1914). It also serves as a location for a variety of activities.

The study and memorial site provides visitors with a film portrait as an introduction to the poet’s life and work. On a guided tour, you may see manuscripts, personal papers, artifacts from the Trakl family’s previous home, and secondary literature.

Georg Trakl was born in Salzburg in 1887, the son of an ironmonger. He lived in Salzburg with his family till he was 21 years old. At the age of 27, he perished at the Garrison Hospital in Krakow at the start of World War I.

In just a few years, he wrote a lyrical work that earned him a distinctive position in twentieth-century German-language lyric poetry. Today, eight literary plaques in Salzburg stand testament to his work and relationship with the Mozart town.
