Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac

The Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Mirabellgarten park is a landmark of the Salzburg gallery scene. It focuses on worldwide contemporary art and now represents over 60 artists and prominent estates.

The gallery serves several functions. It works in the main and secondary art markets, advises museums and public organizations on their acquisitions, and curates private collections. Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac also functions as a publishing business, creating its own books and exhibition catalogues.

Thaddaeus Ropac, born in 1960 in Klagenfurt, Austria, began his career in 1981 in Lienz. Two years later, he founded his first gallery in Salzburg’s Kaigasse. The gallery relocated to Villa Kast, a historic location on Mirabellplatz Square, in 1995. In March 2010 the museum was enlarged to include an exhibition area of roughly 2500m² in an industrial building – the ‘Salzburg Halle’. International expansion occurred with the opening of galleries in Paris (1990), Paris Pantin (2012), London (2017), and Seoul (2021).

The gallery is ranked as one of the top 100 most significant art institutions in the world, and has been so since 2002, according to the British journal ArtReview. Mr. Ropac was ranked 57th in 2019 and is the only Austrian on the list.
