Fridtjof Nansen Park

The Fridtjof-Nansen-Park, commonly known locally as Rodelberg, is a park in Liesing, Vienna’s 23rd district.

The park is approximately 56,550 m2 and is situated in Liesing between Rudolf-Zeller-Gasse, Amstergasse, Mehlfuhrgasse, and Lodrongasse.In addition to its expansive lawns, walking paths, and trees, the large park provides lavish facilities in the form of children’s playgrounds such as climbing towers, fenced areas for small children, sand playground, soccer field, basketball court, beach volleyball court, public fitness equipment FreeGym, skate park, table tennis table, Drinking fountains, and dog zones, as well as seasonal care by the Kinderfreunde Wien.Because of its slopes, the park is utilized as a sledding hill in the winter. The park is available for filming and may be reserved through the Vienna Film Commission.The park is administered by the City of Vienna’s Municipal Department 42 (Wiener Gärtner).

The Fridtjof-Nansen-Park is built on the site of a former quarry that mined Atzgersdorf sandstone until 1956.As a result, the region was used as a landfill.As the region became more densely populated, this was closed in 1963, and the park was established.To safeguard the groundwater and neighboring residential structures, systems for collecting seepage water and active gas collection were developed between 1998 and 2000.The park was named after Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (1861; 1930), a Norwegian naturalist, arctic explorer, diplomat, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
