Franz-Josef-Observatory, also known as the Franz-Josef-Warte, is historic tower offers a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, as well as a glimpse into the past.

The Tower and Its History

The Franz-Josef-Observatory is located on the Freinberg, a hill that overlooks Linz from the west. The tower was built in 1888 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Josef I, who ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1848 to 1916. The tower was designed by Ignaz Scheck, a prominent architect and builder from Upper Austria, who also constructed several other landmarks in the region.

The tower is made of wood and iron, and stands 30 meters high. It has four floors, each with a balcony and windows. The top floor has a dome-shaped roof and a flagpole. The tower is decorated with the imperial coat of arms and the inscription “Franz-Josef-Warte”.

In 1912, a small building was added next to the tower, which served as a porter’s apartment and a refreshment room. The tower was renovated several times over the years, and is now a protected monument.

The Franz-Josef-Observatory is open to the public, and can be accessed by climbing almost a hundred wooden steps inside the tower. Alternatively, you can take the bus line 26 from the main station or the city center, and get off at the stop “Vergeinerstraße”. From there, it is a 10-minute walk to the tower.
