Floridsdorfer Wasserpark

The Floridsdorfer Wasserpark is a tiny section of the Alte Donau constructed as a park in Vienna’s 21st district, Floridsdorf. The park was designed between 1928 and 1929 and covers 143,000 m2, about one-third of which is water.

The water park is located near the Old Danube’s northern end.It is bounded on the west by the approach to the Floridsdorfer Bridge, on the south by the Donauuferautobahn, and on the east by the Nordbahnbrücke, with the Nordbahndamm dividing the park’s waters from the remainder of the Old Danube. The north side is oriented toward Floridsdorfer Zentrum. The park is located near the Vienna Floridsdorf railway station and is accessible through Wiener Linien tram line 31.

From 1870 to 1875, the first Danube regulation shut down the old major arm of the Danube. As wild deposits accumulated, the northwestern end of the resultant Old Danube began to become desolate. As a result, the fortification and rehabilitation of this region became one of the greatest projects of the Vienna City Gardens Office under Director Friedrich Kratochwjle.Instead of the marshy region, the Floridsdorf water park was built from 1928 to 1929 according to plans by landscape architect Kratochwjle.

Deeper ditches were excavated in various locations to make the water park more appealing, and the material removed was utilized to raise other portions of the park.As a consequence, two ponds connected by canals and a big island were created.Gneiss stones lined the walkways, which were lighted by lanterns.Over the deeper ditches, which are designed to function as canals, steep, miniature Japanese-style bridges were created.

Anton Endstorfer created a bronze sculpture of a couple of storks in 1958, which is also on display in the park.

The Floridsdorf water park is now an important feature of the local recreation area in Vienna’s Danube region, which includes the Danube Island, New Danube, and Old Danube.

Because warm Danube water seeps into the park’s body of water via the Hubertusdamm, it does not entirely freeze during the winter and acts as a wintering habitat for ducks.
