The branch church of St. Sigismund is a Roman Catholic church located in the Thumersbach district of Zell am See, which is the capital of the Pinzgau district.
Before 1585, there was a chapel in Thumersbach that was dedicated to St. Sigismund. The structure suffered extensive damage during a severe storm in 1585.We were only able to save the old image of the church patron. In 1590, a new chapel was constructed in response to the request of the people by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. In 1684/1685, a new chapel was built to replace the previous one. The new chapel was slightly larger in size. The building featured a tower and a small wooden porch, which were both preserved until the renovation took place in 1955.
The chapel was extended in 1955, following the architectural plans of Fidelius Schmid. The church has recently acquired a new gallery and tower. This allowed for the capacity to be doubled.
The most recent significant interior renovation occurred in 1995.The church recently had a new roof installed, and the masonry was also dehumidified. The renovation was finalized with the dedication of the newly installed people’s altar and ambo.
A new organ was purchased and inaugurated in 2008.
The Thumersbach Church is a satellite church of the main parish in the town of Zell am See.
The three baroque altars were crafted approximately in the year 1680. The side altars are adorned with exquisitely carved baroque ornaments.
Above the altar, there is a depiction of the Mother of God and Child, adorned with a rosary, symbolizing her role as the Queen of Heaven. She is depicted standing on the globe, symbolically crushing the head of the serpent representing evil, specifically original sin.The Baroque statue is believed to have been created during the latter half of the 17th century. In the 1980s, she was abducted but fortunately managed to return to the Church.
The Madonna in Ears Dress is a beautifully framed image that dates back to the 17th century. It depicts Mary wearing a long blue dress adorned with intricate decorations of ears of corn.
