Ferstel Passage

The Ferstel passage is located in the historic district of Vienna. The Palais Ferstel was constructed between 1856 and 1860. Heinrich von Ferstel, the architect, intended this ‘temporarily’ accessible tunnel as a commercial arcade. His inspiration came from the major Parisian retail passageways. The words “Bis auf Widerruf gestatteter Durchgang” appear above the tunnel, indicating that it is accessible until further notice. Walking through the corridor today brings one back to the height of the Habsburg Empire and the social lives of its leisure classes, with its spectacular arches and glass canopy.

The Palais is linked to the well-known coffeehouse Café Central. As a result, it’s always packed and congested, but it’s worth a visit if you enjoy coffee and beautiful architecture.
