Evangelical parish church of St. Pölten

The Evangelical Parish Church of St. Pölten is a church structure of the Evangelical Church AB in St. Pölten.The listed building is situated between Schiessstattring, Julius-Raab-Promenade, and Hessstraße.The parish is multi-denominational, with members of both the Evangelical Church A.B. and the Evangelical Church H.B. living there.

It serves as the headquarters of the Evangelical Superintendency AB Lower Austria.

The neo-Gothic edifice with an east-facing tower facade to Julius-Raab-Promenade 8 and a longitudinal façade to Hessstraße 18 was erected between 1891 and 1892 according to the architect Ludwig Schöne’s ideas.The church tower includes a pyramidal roof, a pointed arch entryway, a tympanum with relief Agnus Dei, and a rose window.The carved ashlar facade has stepped buttresses, pointed-arch windows, and an eaves with a round-arched frieze.

The vault of the hall is ribbed.The choir is about to conclude.Emil Fuchs’ picture of the Crucified graces the center panel of the neo-Gothic reredos altar.

The church and vicarage were extensively refurbished in 2014.During the reconstruction, the two structures were linked by a new entry lobby with a glass ceiling, forming an atrium that now functions as a community center.

During the reconstruction, the inside of the church was rebuilt in collaboration with the Federal Monuments Office.In a basic design for liturgical usage, the original material is mixed with new innovations.

Only one of the original three bells that hung in the tower survived the two world wars.The ringing should be resumed in the near future.

Orgelbau Pirchner developed the organ in 1959 as a mechanical slider chest organ, and it was one of the first instruments of the so-called “organ movement” in Eastern Austria following WWII.Walter Vonbank renovated it in 2014 as part of the church’s total refurbishment, and two registers were added.
