Eurotherme Bad Ischl is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, who enjoy the imperial flair and the beneficial effects of salt and brine.

The Origins of the Eurotherme Bad Ischl

The EurothermenResort Bad Ischl is located in the city of Bad Ischl, which is famous for its salt production and its role as a summer residence of the Habsburg monarchy. The city’s history of spa and health tourism began in 1823, when the first saltwater baths were given in Bad Ischl. These baths were based on the discovery of the healing properties of the brine, which is the water saturated with salt that is extracted from the salt mines.

The saltwater baths soon became popular among the aristocracy and the high society, who flocked to Bad Ischl to enjoy the benefits of the brine. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city had about 15 health resorts, which offered various treatments and therapies using the natural resources of the region. Some of the famous guests who visited Bad Ischl during this period include Emperor Franz Joseph I, Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), composer Franz Lehár, and writer Franz Grillparzer.

However, after the end of World War I, the city’s spa industry faced a decline, as the demand for saltwater baths decreased and the competition from other spa destinations increased. To revitalize the city’s tourism, the community decided to build a central health resort that would replace the existing ones. The construction of the building complex began in the spring of 1929, with the support of the state of Upper Austria, which took over the management and operation of the state health resort. The Kurmittelhaus, or the treatment center, was officially opened by Federal President Wilhelm Miklas on June 28, 1931. The Kurmittelhaus served as the structural foundation for today’s Eurotherme Bad Ischl.

The Development of the EurothermenResort Bad Ischl

Over the years, the Kurmittelhaus underwent several expansions and renovations to keep up with the changing needs and preferences of the guests. In 1952 and 1968, new tracts were added to the building, which provided inhalation and hydrotherapy services. In 1976, a four-star hotel with 112 rooms was built next to the treatment center, and connected to it by an underground tube. The hotel, which was originally called the spa hotel, is now known as the Hotel Royal.

In 1994, the name of the state health resort was changed to Kaiser Therme, or the Emperor’s Spa, to honor the city’s imperial heritage. In 2002, the spa company was separated from the state administration and formed as a GmbH, or a limited liability company, together with the hotel. This marked the beginning of the privatization and modernization of the spa and hotel complex.

In 2008, after a major renovation, the restaurant was reopened, along with the refurbished thermal baths, which cost about 32 million euros. The renovation also included the construction of a new central underground parking garage, which cost around 8.3 million euros, and the improvement of the station forecourt, which cost 1.3 million euros.

In the same year, the thermal complex and the Hotel Royal were given a new name: EurothermenResort Bad Ischl, with the additional designation of Salzkammergut Therme, or the Salt Chamber Spa. The name reflects the affiliation of the complex with the EurothermenResorts brand, which also operates the thermal baths in Bad Schallerbach and Bad Hall. The EurothermenResorts are part of the O Thermenholding GmbH, Upper Austria’s largest tourism company. The EurothermenResort Bad Ischl GmbH & Co KG is fully owned by the Upper Austrian holding company.
