Essling Jazz Park

The Essling Jazz Park is a park located in the Essling sector in Vienna’s 22nd district, Donaustadt. It is called after Essling’s “jazz district” and is located in the historic core of Essling.

Essling Jazz Park is surrounded by Esslinger Hauptstraße, Colerusgasse, and Grosserweg, and to the west by the fence of the next property.A multi-generational active park occupies the park’s south-eastern section, which is visually divided from the rest of the park by thick bushes.A circular path leads to the war monument in the northern section, while the Kulturstadl and the cultural association’s two exhibition pavilions are in the western section.

The war memorial for Essling men who died in both world wars consists of a stone wall made from stones from the Kronprinz Rudolf Bridge (the oldest predecessor structure of today’s Reichsbrücke) and is surrounded by a stone with the inscription “WELTKRIEGE 1914 -1918 1939-1945”.An etched tablet with the names of the fallen takes up the majority of the wall.A flower garden in front of it is bordered on both sides by a stone block with an etched tablet with further names.

The Kulturfleckerl Essling organization organizes events many times a month in the Kulturstadl, which is designed in the shape of a haystack.A former bathroom facility, now a listed structure, sits next to it and serves as a pavilion for special exhibitions as part of significant events organized by the cultural organization.Wilhelm Beetz erected the historic urinal in 1912, which was initially placed on Laubeplatz in the 10th district and was relocated to its current site in 2005.

The park’s southern addition likewise pays homage to the jazz motif, with a circle course and a park area surrounded by plants created in the shape of a trumpet or guitar when viewed from above. It features different senior exercise equipment and “head training” stations to promote physical and mental health as one of several Viennese active parks and, at the time of its establishment, the seventh generation active park.Six freshly designed Donaustadt seats, in the district colors of the Donaustadt emblem, petrol blue and red, were installed here for the first time. There is also a music installation and a board game table for chess and ludo.

History

In the 1950s, the northern portion of today’s Essling Jazz Park was already park-like.The military memorial for slain Esslingers from both world wars was dedicated here in 1957.The naming of an alley after jazz performer Fatty George, who grew up in Essling, and a park north of Grossenzersdorfer Straße after jazz pianist Bill Grah established the groundwork for this “jazz district” in the late 1990s.Construction on an event facility in what is now the Jazzpark began at the end of 2003, and the Kulturstadl, which has since been maintained by the Kulturfleckerl Esslingis, was opened in September 2005.A month later, the jazz museum Fatty George Jazzmus and an exhibition pavilion, both situated in designated historic bathroom facilities, opened close to the Kulturstadl. The previously unnamed park was ultimately named after Esslingen’s “jazz district” as a result of a city council resolution on October 2, 2007.The park was enlarged in 2011 to incorporate a southern portion planned as a generational active park, which opened in June 2012.The one from Bill Grah Park in 1999The annual Esslingen Jazz Festival, which features live music, was eventually relocated to the Jazzpark and is now held every summer with free entrance.
