The golf course in Enzesfeld is a stunning 18-hole championship course located just 29 km south of Vienna. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in all of Europe, and for good reasons.
A Rich History
The private golf course, which was initially constructed by Baron Rothschild in the early 1900s, has a rich and fascinating history. It was originally a hunting ground for the aristocracy, and later became a refuge for Jewish families during the Nazi era. The course underwent expansion in the late 1960s, based on the designs of Commander John D. Harris, an esteemed American golf architect known for his work on more than 30 golf courses across the globe. The result is a course that blends tradition and modernity, offering a variety of challenges and pleasures for golfers of all levels.
A Natural Beauty
The course is truly inspiring, with its fairways expertly carved into the depths of the forest. The air is refreshingly clean, and the tranquility of the surroundings is simply wonderful. The fairways, which are nestled within the undulating terrain, are distinctly divided by a lush and dense forest consisting of a variety of trees, such as oak, beech, pine, and birch. Even on busy days, you can still find the necessary rest to enjoy a relaxing and focused game. The only thing that distracts you is the breathtaking beauty of nature, which changes with the seasons and the weather. You might encounter deer, rabbits, squirrels, and birds along the way, adding to the charm of the course.
A Unique Challenge
Both professionals and beginners are equally enthusiastic about the course, which provides a unique opportunity to experience challenging golf amidst stunning natural surroundings, a surprising find in such close proximity to Vienna. The course has a par of 72, and measures 6,150 meters from the back tees. It features narrow fairways, fast greens, water hazards, and bunkers, requiring accuracy, strategy, and skill. The course is also known for its signature holes, such as the 9th, a par 5 with a dogleg left and a pond guarding the green, and the 18th, a par 4 with a steep uphill approach and a spectacular view of the clubhouse. The course is well-maintained and offers excellent playing conditions throughout the year.
A Friendly Atmosphere
The club’s special character is defined by its welcoming family atmosphere and outstanding restaurant. The club has a diverse and international membership, with more than 1,000 members from over 20 countries. The club organizes various events and tournaments, such as the Enzesfeld Open, the Club Championship, and the Ryder Cup, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among the members. The club also offers a golf academy, a driving range, a putting green, and a pro shop, catering to the needs of both beginners and advanced players. The restaurant, which is open to the public, serves delicious Austrian and international cuisine, using fresh and local ingredients.
