Engelseck Castle

Engelseck Castle (sometimes spelled Engelsegg) is a castle complex in Steyr (Redtenbachergasse No. 9) that was built in 1500.The estate was known as Teufelseck until 1642.The Federal Monuments Office has a listing for “Schloss Engelsegg.”

The exact date of building of Engelseck is unknown, however the seat is mentioned as early as the 13th century. The builder is most likely Hans Fuchsberger, a rich textile dealer who served as mayor of Steyr between 1525 and 1526.Josef Achtmarkt von Achtmarktstein (mayor from 1642 to 1645, 1647) bought the castle in 1641 and restored it in Renaissance style. The residence’s name was changed from Teufelseck to Engelseck.Teufelsegg takes its name from the Teufelsbach, which runs partially underground.

The castle was bought by Mattheus Riss in 1667, and the Riss von Risenfels family held it until 1726.Johann Josef von Risenfels’ wife was Helena Theresia Händl von Ramingdorf. The proprietor was Franziska von Rummel. In 1783, Freifrau Franziska von Rummel sold the territory to Jakob Voith.

Other owners included the Höger family, Josef Mayr (1835), and Josef Werndl, who also owned Rosenegg Castle.Engelsegg met the Counts of Lamberg through his daughter Anna. The city of Steyr has owned the land since 1918.

The chateau is a simple two-story Renaissance building.Because to the three-wing floor arrangement, the courtyard is visible from the front. The short side wings’ fronts have hipped roofs.A high tower is placed into the middle wing and is flanked by two round towers and a crenellated wall. The central tower has no roof and is surrounded by a platform with a false crenellation that replaces the previously existing onion dome.A statue of St. Nepomuk stands against a wall.An arched frieze and imitation ashlar accent the exterior. The years 1766 and 1617 are pinned to the coat of arms on the south side of the castle courtyard, respectively. The Redtenbachergasse circular tower is outfitted with a view over Steyr.A park with trees is located near and behind the castle.
