Emperor Franz Monument

The Emperor Franz Monument, located on the Inner Burgplatz (In der Burg) of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria, was erected to Emperor Franz I (II) in 1846.

The sculptor Pompeo Marchesi was commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I to design a massive monument honoring the first Austrian Emperor Franz I and the last of the Holy Roman Empire (Emperor Franz II).The foundation stone was placed on the eve of the Battle of Leipzig in 1842, and the monument was unveiled on June 16, 1846.

It represents the Emperor in antique costume atop an octagonal pillar. Bronze reliefs showing people’s occupations adorn the pillar’s lateral faces.Four huge sculptures surround the pillar, representing faith, power, peace, and justice.
