The Domplatz is a rectangular area in Salzburg’s old town that is surrounded on all sides. It is in front of the Salzburg Cathedral’s front.Arcades link the square to Franziskanergasse, Kappelleplatz, and Residencenzplatz.
The portions of the Salzburg Residence, which dates back to about 1600, are located to the north and west.On the south side of St. Peter’s Abbey, the convent wing was modified sometime after the cathedral towers were finished, about 1663.This architectural harmony was achieved for the Domplatz under the reign of Prince-Archbishop Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein.
The convent wing is attached to the cathedral.Additionally, it is joined to the house by Giovanni Antonio Dario’s cathedral arches. For the DomQuartier Salzburg, a museum tour around the buildings on Domplatz was organized between 2005 and 2014.
The Domplatz saw the completion of Salzburg and Bavaria’s union on September 30, 1810.The seizing patent was read out to the gathering populace from the residence’s balcony following the Salzburg officials’ swearing-in to the Bavarian state.
Since 1920, the Salzburg Festival has featured a performance of Herrenmann on the Domplatz.Along with the Residenzplatz, it serves as the venue for the yearly Christmas market.
