The Salzburg Cathedral Museum is housed in the cathedral’s south oratory. The museum also serves as the diocese museum.
Even before the First World War, Pinzgau canon Josef Lahnsteiner requested that the ancient collection be rebuilt and shown in Salzburg, and he began collecting for it on his own. On the occasion of the new cathedral’s dedication in 1954, the first sections of the collection were presented. The decision to establish a new cathedral museum open to the public was taken in 1972. It first opened its doors in 1974.
The Dommuseum has been a member of the DomQuartier Salzburg since 2014.
The permanent exhibition displays art treasures from the Archdiocese of Salzburg dating from the eighth to the eighteenth centuries, including precious liturgical utensils from the cathedral treasury as well as Gothic and Baroque paintings and sculptures from Salzburg churches and monasteries (Meinrad Guggenbichler, Georg Raphael Donner, Johann Michael Rottmayr, and Paul Troger ).
Important exhibits include:
- The biggest surviving metal cross from the first Christian millennium, the Rupertus Cross from Bischofshofen, was most likely manufactured in southern England around the middle of the eighth century and was most likely installed in the first Salzburg cathedral.
- a double-armed reliquary cross from Hungary (about 1100), probably the Hungarian monarchs’ swearing cross
- Limoges host dove (late 13th century)
- a panel from the Pfarrwerfen altar (about 1425/30), representing Christ in the temple on the festival side and Saints Leonhart and Rupert on the weekday side; The Salzburg Museum houses another panel from the previous altar.
- a Madonna from Michael Pacher’s circle (about 1495/1500)
