The Dom Museum Wien is an Archdiocese of Vienna museum located in the Zwettlerhof, near to the Archbishop’s Palace on Stephansplatz 6.
Cardinal Theodor Innitzer founded the Archbishop’s Cathedral and Diocesan Museum, which opened on June 3, 1933, in the grounds of the Archbishop’s Palace. The museum relocated to the Zwettlerhof (Stephansplatz 6) in 1973, and additional rooms were modified for museum activities beginning in the mid-1980s.
It was known as “Dommuseum” from 2010 to 2015, and the official name has been “Dom Museum Wien” from August 1, 2015.The museum was closed in May 2012 to be rebuilt and thematically realigned.Johanna Schwanberg, a Viennese art historian, has been in charge of the Dom Museum Wien since March 2013.
The Austrian Museum Prize was granted to the museum in 2020.
The museum’s permanent collection includes works from over a thousand years ago, particularly from St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the archdiocese’s other churches in Vienna and Lower Austria.Since its reopening in 2017, the Otto Mauer Collection has had its own space in the permanent collection. The contrast of ancient and contemporary art, tradition and modernity, is an important feature of the new exhibition idea.In the permanent exhibition, works by modern artists (Iris Andraschek, Hubert Lobnig, Maria Hahnenkamp, Judith Huemer) contextualize, contradict, and complement the historical relics.
