Dobratsch Nature Park

Dobratsch Nature Park is a beautiful and diverse destination for nature lovers, hikers, and adventurers. Located near the city of Villach in Carinthia, Austria, the park covers an area of 8100 hectares and includes the Dobratsch mountain, the Schütt landslide area, and the Natura 2000 conservation area. One of the main features of the park is the Dobratsch mountain, which rises to 2167 meters above sea level and offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and lakes. The mountain is accessible by car via the Villach Alpine Road, a scenic toll road that leads to the Rosstratten parking area at 1732 meters2. From there, visitors can hike to the summit, where they can see the distinctive transmitter tower, the two highest churches in Europe, and the modern Gipfelhaus lodge and restaurant. The mountain also has several hiking trails of different lengths and difficulties, such as the Dobratsch circular route, which goes around the mountain and reveals its natural and cultural diversity.

Another highlight of the park is the Schütt landslide area, which was formed by a massive rockfall in 1348 that buried several villages and created a unique landscape of hills, ponds, and wetlands. The area is a habitat for many rare plants and animals, such as orchids, dragonflies, frogs, and birds. The area also has a geology trail that explains the history and formation of the Schütt, as well as a sensory alpine garden that showcases more than 1000 alpine plants.

The park also encompasses the Natura 2000 conservation area, which is part of a European network of protected sites that aim to preserve biodiversity and natural heritage. The area covers the Dobratsch and the surrounding mountains, and includes habitats such as forests, grasslands, cliffs, and caves. The area is home to many endangered species, such as the golden eagle, the lynx, the alpine salamander, and the lady’s slipper orchid.
