Diözesanmuseum Graz

The Graz Diocese Museum (Diözesanmuseum) is located in Graz and serves as the museum for the Graz-Seckau Diocese. The institution serves two purposes. Firstly, it functions as the museum of the Styrian Catholic Church. Secondly, it serves as the diocesan conservatorship, responsible for the preservation of ecclesiastical monuments in Styria. The Graz Diocesan Museum has been consistently awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality for its comprehensive and high-quality museum work since 2002.

In 1932, the Diocesan Museum was established by Ferdinand Stanislaus Pawlikowski, the Prince Bishop of Seckau, in collaboration with Johannes Mandl, a clergyman and art historian. The museum is located within Graz Cathedral and is comprised of three chapels stacked on top of each other: the Barbara Chapel, Friedrich Chapel, and Romuald Chapel. The museum became inaccessible for political reasons starting in 1938, and it was subsequently closed from 1942 onwards for air raid protection. After the necessary repairs to fix the war damage, it was reopened in 1948.

The museum relocated to the Minorite Monastery in Graz in 1974 and remained there until 2008.Today, the museum is situated in the historic former Jesuit college, which is now a seminary located at Bürgergasse 2 in the inner city.
