Location

The Danube Island originates from the New Danube intake structure in Langenzersdorf, Lower Austria, travels through Vienna via the neighborhoods of Floridsdorf and Donaustadt, and ends where the New Danube flows into the main stream behind the Lobau oil terminal. As a result, the Danube Island isolates the New Danube from the main stream and forms a whole New Danube bank.

It is part of the following Viennese cadastral communities (from northwest to southeast): Schwarze Lackenau, Floridsdorf, Donaufeld, Kaisermühlen, Stadlau, Aspern, and the two cadastral communities of Lobau (Landjägermeisteramt and Kaiserebersdorf Herrschaft).

Recreation and festival venue

The island is known to most visitors as a leisure location with bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. It offers sports such as rollerblading, cycling, swimming, and canoeing. There is one beach that, at first, felt so exotic that it was quickly called “Copa Cagrana” as a satirical allusion to Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana: Kagran is the area of Vienna’s 22nd District close to that beach. There are several (and free) nudist beaches on the island’s southern and northern coasts.

With over 3 million people, the Donauinselfest is an internationally recognized yearly open air festival and Europe’s largest event of its type. Except for 2008 (September 5-7), when Austria (and Switzerland) host the European Football Championship, it is held at the end of June (Friday through Sunday). Madonna had her debut concert in Austria in front of 57,000 people on September 23, 2008.
