Located just 10 kilometers south of Vienna, Colony Club Gutenhof is the first and only 36-hole golf facility in Austria, offering two 18-hole championship courses that cater to different preferences and skill levels. The club also boasts a range of facilities and services that make it a destination for golfers and non-golfers alike.
History
Colony Club Gutenhof was founded in 1988 by Hans Christian Höfer, a businessman and golf enthusiast who wanted to create a golf paradise near Vienna. He acquired a large piece of land in the barony of Gutenhof, which was formerly a hunting ground for the Habsburg dynasty. He hired the renowned golf architects Hans-Georg Erhardt and Kurt Rossknecht to design two 18-hole courses that would blend in with the natural landscape and challenge golfers of all abilities. The club opened in 1990 with the West course, which follows the creek of the Kalten Gang and features several water hazards. The East course was added in 1992, and offers a more open and spacious layout with strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens. The club was named Colony Club Gutenhof, reflecting the colonial style of the clubhouse and the historical name of the area.
Features
olony Club Gutenhof has two 18-hole courses, each with its own character and difficulty. The West course is widely regarded as the more challenging and scenic of the two, as it winds through the old riverside forests of the Gutenhof area. The course measures 6,483 meters from the back tees and has a par of 73. The signature hole is the 2nd, a par 4 that requires a precise tee shot over the creek of the Kalten Gang, followed by a tricky approach to a well-guarded green. The West course also has several other holes that test the golfer’s accuracy and course management, such as the 7th, a long par 5 with a narrow fairway and a water hazard on the right, and the 18th, a par 4 that plays uphill to the clubhouse and has a large bunker in front of the green.
The East course is slightly shorter and easier than the West course, measuring 6,404 meters from the back tees and also having a par of 73. The course is more open and forgiving, but still offers plenty of challenges and variety. The signature hole is the 9th, a par 5 that doglegs to the right and has a large pond on the left side of the fairway and the green. The East course also has some interesting holes that require strategic thinking and shot-making, such as the 3rd, a par 4 that has a blind tee shot over a hill and a sloping green, and the 17th, a par 3 that plays over a ravine and has a bunker behind the green.
Both courses are maintained in excellent condition throughout the year, thanks to the dedicated work of the head greenkeepers John Jackson and Sean Baxter and their team. The club also has a state-of-the-art irrigation system that ensures optimal playing conditions and environmental sustainability. The club hosts several tournaments and events every year, such as the Austrian Open, the Austrian Amateur Championship, and the Colony Cup. The club is also a member of the Leading Golf Courses of Austria, a prestigious association of the best golf courses in the country.
