- Climbing center Seewand in Zauchensee
The Climbing Center Seewand in Zauchensee is a popular destination for climbers of all levels. It offers a variety of routes and challenges, from easy to difficult, on a scenic rock wall overlooking the lake.
The Seewand is a massive limestone formation that rises above the Zauchensee, a glacial lake in the Salzburg region of Austria. It is part of the Dachstein mountain range, which is known for its spectacular scenery and diverse terrain. The Seewand is also home to one of the most impressive climbing centers in the country, with over 100 routes ranging from grade 3 to 9+ on the UIAA scale. The climbing center was established in 2004 by the local alpine club, and has since attracted thousands of climbers from near and far.
The climbing center is divided into four sectors: the Seewand Klettersteig, the Seewand Südwand, the Seewand Nordwand, and the Seewand Ostwand. Each sector has its own character and difficulty level, offering something for everyone. The Seewand Klettersteig is the most popular and challenging sector, featuring a 750-meter long via ferrata (fixed-rope route) that ascends the steep and exposed south face of the Seewand. The via ferrata is rated D/E, meaning very difficult to extremely difficult, and requires a high level of fitness, skill, and courage. The route takes about 2.5 hours to complete, and offers stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The via ferrata is equipped with steel cables, ladders, bridges, and pegs, but climbers still need to bring their own harness, helmet, and via ferrata set. The via ferrata is open from May to October, depending on the weather conditions.
The Seewand Südwand is the easiest and most family-friendly sector, with about 30 routes from grade 3 to 6. The routes are mostly vertical or slightly overhanging, and are well-protected with bolts. The sector is ideal for beginners and children, as well as for warming up or cooling down. The Seewand Südwand is also open from May to October, and can be accessed by a short walk from the parking lot.
The Seewand Nordwand is the most diverse and adventurous sector, with about 40 routes from grade 4 to 9+. The routes are located on the north face of the Seewand, which is shaded and cool in the summer, but also more prone to wetness and snow in the winter. The routes vary from slabs to cracks to roofs, and are often long and complex. The sector is suitable for intermediate and advanced climbers, who are looking for a challenge and a variety of styles. The Seewand Nordwand is open from June to September, and can be reached by a 20-minute hike from the parking lot.
The Seewand Ostwand is the newest and most secluded sector, with about 10 routes from grade 6 to 8+. The routes are located on the east face of the Seewand, which is sunny and warm in the morning, but also exposed to the wind and the weather. The routes are mostly steep and technical, and require a good level of endurance and strength. The sector is recommended for experienced and ambitious climbers, who are looking for a quiet and remote spot. The Seewand Ostwand is open from July to September, and can be accessed by a 30-minute hike from the parking lot.
The Climbing Center Seewand in Zauchensee is a must-visit for any climber who loves nature and adventure. It offers a wide range of routes and difficulties, as well as a breathtaking scenery and a friendly atmosphere. The climbing center is also close to other attractions, such as the Zauchensee ski resort, the Dachstein glacier, and the Hallstatt UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climbing center is easily reachable by car or public transport, and has a large parking lot and a nearby camping site.
