The centre is the second largest shopping center in Carinthia, after Atrio in Villach. It is situated at the northern edge of Klagenfurt’s city center in terms of area.

City-Arkaden was opened on St. Velter Ring on March 28, 2006, following a year and a half of construction. The planning and construction of the center faced opposition from a segment of the population. They criticized the center for not passing an environmental impact assessment and for neglecting the southern part of the city center during construction. To make room for the center, the 19th-century industrial buildings of Julius Christoph Neuner’s leather factory had to be dismantled. The rooms had remained vacant for several decades.

The shopping center is comprised of three floors, housing over 110 businesses, cafes, and restaurants. The total shopping area spans 30,000 square meters. There are a total of 880 paid parking spaces spread across two floors. In order to prevent traffic congestion, the St. Veiter Ring was expanded to include four lanes in the vicinity of City-Arkaden. The bus stop “Heuplatz” is located right in front of the main entrance. Here, you can catch the Klagenfurt city buses 40 and 41, which arrive every 7 to 15 minutes. These buses will take you to various destinations, including the Klagenfurt railway station, Annabichl, and Feschnig.

Out of the businesses located in City-Arkaden, 40 of them initially established their first premises in Carinthia’s city center. Additionally, 15 of these businesses chose Carinthia as their first location in Austria. The shopping center is under the management of the ECE Group, which is based in Hamburg, Germany. Deutsche EuroShop owns the shopping centre.

There is also a shopping center located in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, that is similar to the one mentioned. However, the shopping center in Wuppertal was not constructed as part of an existing building complex; rather, it was built entirely from the ground up. Due to this, the area offers a unique range of businesses and gastronomic services.

Public transport provides convenient access to the City Arkaden Klagenfurt. The central location is convenient for those who arrive by car as there are over 900 parking spaces available for visitors.
