Church of St. Ulrich (Villach)

The parish of Maria Landskron includes the branch church of St. Ulrich near Villach.Ortisei appears for the first time in 1431.The edifice received considerable modifications with Romanesque and Gothic features during the 1966 renovation. The nave was extended and enlarged.A tiny onion helmet crowns the eastern ridge turret with round-arched sound apertures. The low, slightly indented Gothic choir concludes in 5/8 time. The sacristy and the freshly erected mortuary are located to the north. The old west doorway, a late Gothic pointed arch gateway, has been relocated to the north side. The rebuilt south gate with a canopy leads to the church.

The exposed, wood-clad roof truss may be seen inside in the enlarged section of the nave. The Romanesque section of the nave has a flat wooden ceiling. The organ gallery is constructed of concrete. In 1966, the semi-circular triumphal arch was expanded. The lunette barrel vault may be seen in the single bay choir. The cross-vaulted sacristy is entered by a Gothic shoulder arch doorway.

R. Kamnig redesigned the sanctuary in 1995/96.The tiny Gothic winged altar, made before or around 1500 by the older Villach workshop, is noteworthy. The statue of Saint Ulrich is in the middle, Saints Nicholas and Rupert are on the insides of the wings, and Mary and the Angel of the Annunciation are on the outside. The baroque hanging cross from the early 18th century was used as a processional cross.Vassach Church presently houses the church’s old high altar.
