- Church of St. Leonhard
The Leonhardikirche is located on the outskirts of Murau, on a wooded slope near Grünfels Castle. It is on the site of the medieval castle chapel of St. Catherine and was most likely built soon after the St. Anne’s Church, as it is already listed as a pilgrimage church in 1439.
With net vaulting, the long, light-filled chancel extends the lofty hall. The large windows are embellished with rich tracery, and keystones and corbels are elaborately ornamented. The high altar, pulpit, and right side altar were completed in 1640. On the parapet of the music gallery are the coats of arms of Anna Neumann, five of her husbands, and the imperial princes of Schwarzenberg. The entire church area is surrounded by a defensive wall, which is linked to the west by a stairway that leads to the Holy Sepulcher Chapel, which was finished in 1680.The church’s façade, which is elegantly adorned with stone, was refurbished between 1994 and 1995.
