- Church of St. Cyril and Methodius
The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius is located in the 5th district of Graz, Gries. It is a Serbian Orthodox church. The Church of the Crucified Savior, which was originally Roman Catholic, has now been consecrated to the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius.
The sacred building is situated within the premises of the Graz Central Cemetery. It was skillfully crafted in the neo-Gothic brick style, which is consistent with the architectural design of other structures in the cemetery. The renowned architect Carl Lauzil was responsible for its creation. The church we visited today was originally designed as a consecration hall. It was constructed between 1886 and 1895 and was officially blessed on October 4, 1895, as the Roman Catholic Church of the Redeemer.
The consecration took place on May 14th only after the completion of the ciborium altar. In 1918, the consecration hall underwent a name change and was renamed the Church of the Crucified Saviour. Later, in 1939/40, it was temporarily elevated to the status of an independent parish church. In 1996, the parish was dissolved and placed under the authority of the Graz-St. John parish. The Church of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese for Central Europe was then made accessible to the Styrian parish. The Serbian Orthodox parish and church were dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius during a consecration ceremony. The church is owned by the Roman Catholic Church as well.
The sacred building, located in the central axis of the central cemetery, is notable for its almost square floor plan and impressive double-shelled dome, flanked by two smaller domes. The central building is connected to the consecration and laying-out room in the south and north through arcades. The side walls feature embedded monumental wheel windows. The transition to the dome is adorned by the four evangelists inside the raw brick building. The high altar features a representation of the Redeemer. The ciborium, which is made of light sandstone, is situated beneath the dome.
