Church of St. Anton am Flugfeld

The Roman Catholic parish of St. Anton am Flugfeld (parish church till 2019) is located at Flugfeld belt 17 in the Flugfeld neighborhood of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. The parish of St. Anton is part of the provost parish of Wiener Neustadt, which is part of the Deanery of Wiener Neustadt, which is part of the Vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

In the course of aviation development, an airport at Wiener Neustadt was built in 1909 and served as the heart of Austrian aviation at the time.Following World War I, municipal structures, including the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Hof, were constructed.Since the 1920s, there have been endeavors to build a church, which resulted in the purchase and conversion of the derelict central heating boiler house of the air force barracksled to a church in the years 1933 to 1934.In 1934, the church was dedicated. The previous chimney was renovated into a three-story bell tower in 1937.It is worth noting that the bell tower does not terminate with a church knob bearing a cross, but rather with two flashing lights for the airstrip behind it.The church was elevated to the status of parish church in 1939.During World War II, severe damage was done.

From 1960 to 1964, the church was renovated and expanded according to the architect Josef Patzelt’s ideas into a modern rectangular hall building with a gabled roof. Each side wall was built with three huge arched windows. The new glass windows were designed by Grete Frank, while Josef Adamcik created a mural and three paintings.

The parish of Wiener Neustadt-St. Anton was lifted on April 1, 2019. The old parish church of St. Anton am Flugfeld is now a branch church of the parish church of Wiener Neustadt and serves as the parish church of St. Anton.
