The Chiemseehof is a medieval palace in Salzburg’s Kaiviertel. The old seat of the Chiemsee bishops is now home to the Salzburg state administration and the Salzburg state parliament.
It consists of five buildings in a row between Pfeifergasse and Krotachgasse, with an inner courtyard accessible from the latter. The ensemble is part of Salzburg’s UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center.
Eberhard von Regensberg, Archbishop of Salzburg, created the Diocese of Chiemsee in 1215.The archbishop’s personal auxiliary bishop was the bishop of Chiemsee, who also placed additional duties on him.Despite being bishop of his own diocese, the bishop always lived in Salzburg, at the Chiemseehof, which was first recorded in 1216.It was converted into a dwelling around 1300.The court chapel, which could certainly be called a church, was launched in 1497 in increased dimensions.Following a fire at the end of the 16th century, the structures were restored, extended, and reconstructed beginning in 1694.Until 1812, the Chiemseehof was the home of the bishops of Chiemsee. In 1812, the former bishop of Chiemsee, Sigmund Christoph von Zeil and Trauchburg, was appointed as administrator of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. His successors, the Archbishops of Salzburg Augustin Gruber, Prince of Schwarzenberg, and Prince of Tarnóczy, lived here until 1861.Since 1866, the Chiemseehof has served as the seat of the Salzburg state parliament and government.Several times, the complex was reconstructed. The Kumpfmüller gate, comprising expansions and the court chapel, was destroyed in 1873 as part of adaptation work. The legislative meeting space for today was set up in a structure erected by Bishop Silvester Pfluger (1438-1451) as a grain storage. The Chiemseehof was substantially rebuilt between 1967 and 1977.
The Chiemseehof was renovated for an estimated 7.4 million euros between 2017 and 2019.The Salzburg Residence and the municipal council meeting room at Salzburg City Hall functioned as alternate quarters for state parliament sessions. In the summer of 2019, the refurbishment was finished. The first meetings in the rebuilt Chiemseehof took place on February 20, 2019.
