The parish church of St. Leopold is a Roman Catholic branch church of the cathedral’s provost church in Wiener Neustadt, located at Wiener Straße 61. Originally a Jesuit church until 1773, when the Jesuit order was disbanded. The church is known as the suburban church because it stood in front of the former Vienna Gate of the city wall and was placed as a point of view in the axis of Wiener Straße, which has since made a bend in front of the church forecourt, revealing the remains of a Roman road leading to Vienna in the extension.
The Jesuit Church was built in front of the city from 1737 to 1743 as a northern hall building, with a Jesuit college parallel to the east as a late Baroque complex, with both objects joined by an upper floor corridor.A former baroque college garden stood to the west of the chapel.Field Marshal Franz Leopold von Zungaberg, who died in 1735, left the funds for the construction. In 1745, the church was dedicated. Following the collapse of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church was elevated to parish church status in 1791.The former Jesuit college, which is structurally connected to the church, became the Salzamt in 1773, a military hospital from 1783 to 1903, with the church serving as a hospital church, the Stadtmuseum Wiener Neustadt from 1904 to 1990, and the Stadtarchiv Wiener Neustadt since 1992.
The square hall church with two cross-oval vaulted bays is presented to the south by a vestibule with ancillary rooms, a recessed gallery with the upper floor corridor to the former Jesuit college and the tower, and ends in the north with a square chancel.
The Catholic-Austrian student association Babenberg zu Wiener Neustadt’s clubhouse has been located in the basement of the church, which is a member of the middle school student cartel association, since 1984.
The former benefactor house, a two-story baroque structure southwest of the church, joins the church courtyard with the next house at No. 59. A tiny baroque crucifixion group stands on the church forecourt. Behind it, the ruins of a Roman road can be seen.
The ancient washing pond on the polishing creek, a tributary of the Kehrbach, flows in by the former Krupp’sche spoon plant, now the Santa Christiana church school, and into the Warme Fischa to the north of the church.
