Café Savoy

The Café Savoy, formerly referred to as Café Wienzeile, is a coffee house and gay bar located on the left bank of the Wien river (Linke Wienzeile) in the Mariahilf district of Vienna. The establishment was opened in the year 1896.

The architect Franz von Neumann designed and built the building in 1896 and 1897. It was commissioned by Julius Léon von Wernburg, a textile manufacturer who purchased the property in 1889. The café now occupies most of the street-level floor. Originally named Café Wienzeile, the café was situated in a location that inspired its name. It was owned by the Kuszak family, who were also proprietors of coffee houses in Prague and Budapest. The café boasts a palatial architectural style, with two mirrors that are said to be the largest in Europe. These mirrors are made from a single piece, similar to the ones found in the Palace of Versailles. Additionally, the café showcases a magnificent chandelier designed by Theophil von Hansen.

In 1983, the coffee house underwent a name change and became known as Café Savoy. Additionally, it was downsized to occupy just over a third of the ground level. Subsequently, in 2008 and 2009, the café underwent renovations.
