Café Restaurant Bräunerhof

Café Bräunerhof is a charming Viennese café and restaurant situated at Stallburggasse 2 in the Innere Stadt, the first district of Vienna, Austria. Bräunerhof gained its reputation as the favored café of the renowned Austrian writer, Thomas Bernhard. Today, there is a display case showcasing a photograph of the author and indicating the location of a nearby café at a street corner. The café hosts live music every Saturday, featuring a small orchestra that performs waltzes and classical music. The restaurant, known as Café Sans Souci, was opened by Friedrich Bolberitz around 1920 or 1921. The location served as a gathering spot for local antique dealers and also operated as a dance café. In 1938, Bolberitz was compelled to depart from Vienna. Following his departure, his successor made the decision to rename the house as “Bräunerhof,” which was derived from the name of the street it is located on, Bräunerstrasse. Under the ownership of Siegfried Hosnik, the café once again became a popular gathering place for artists and writers.
