Café Jelinek

Café Jelinek is situated in the 6th district of Mariahilf in Vienna, specifically on Otto-Bauer-Gasse. It has been recognized as a significant component of Vienna’s intangible UNESCO cultural heritage, known as the “Viennese Coffee House,” since 2013. The café, which opened in 1910, derives its name from a Jewish family of coffee makers.

Mr. and Mrs. Knapp were in charge of running the café from 1988 to 2003. In addition to other things, they were recognized for wearing apothecary coats while at the café.Afterwards, the pub was taken over by the couple Haas and Schiffner, who also manage the Viennese pub located across the street. Café Jelinek stands out among Viennese coffee houses as one of the rare establishments that have managed to preserve their original furnishings.

The house’s long history is evident through various features, such as the original herringbone parquet flooring, the impressive marble tables, the listed wrought-iron coke oven from the American-Heating brand, and the green upholstered seating. The walls of the café, often referred to as “little Hawelka,” are adorned with autographed photos of numerous guests.
