Cafe Hawelka remains one of Vienna’s most renowned coffee houses. Here, you will find an authentic atmosphere that serves as a meeting place for writers and artists from both the past and present.
The Café Hawelka, located in Vienna’s 1st district, is a cherished Central European tradition that continues to attract writers and artists. The café is still operated by the Hawelka family, just as it was 80 years ago when Leopold Hawelka and his wife Josefine first opened it.
The decor is traditional and has not been renovated since the opening.The café has long been recognized as a popular gathering spot for the vibrant Viennese art scene. During the 1960s and 1970s, the atmosphere was particularly defined by the presence of artists and individualists.
The specialty of Hawelka is their buns, which are prepared using an authentic Bohemian recipe.Buchteln are delicious yeast dumplings filled with a sweet filling.
