The Butterfly House is a butterfly zoo located in Vienna’s first district, Inner City. It is positioned on the border of the Burggarten in the north-west wing of the Palmenhaus.
The current palm house, which is 128 meters long and has a floor space of roughly 2,050 m2, was erected in 1901 according to plans by architect Friedrich Ohmann. After it was shuttered for security concerns in 1988, it underwent a general renovation costing roughly 13 million euros. In 1998, the palm house reopened. Since then, the butterfly house, which covers an area of 280 m2, has been housed in the left, north-west wing.
The approximately 400 tropical butterflies flying freely in the butterfly house can be allocated to 150 distinct species, none of which are protected by law. The glass house’s inside is supposed to seem like a tropical jungle, with a constant temperature of roughly 26 degrees and a humidity of around 80%.
