Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is not only known for its stunning alpine scenery and rich historical heritage, but also for its vibrant and diverse cultural scene. One of the main contributors to this scene is the BRUX / Freies Theater Innsbruck, a theatre that offers a wide range of artistic events and exhibitions throughout the year.

BRUX / Freies Theater is a theatre that was founded in 2012 by a group of independent artists and cultural workers who wanted to create a space for contemporary and experimental theatre in Innsbruck. The theatre is located in the city center, next to the Landhausplatz plaza, and has a capacity of 120 seats. The theatre organizes up to 200 cultural events every year, covering various genres and formats, such as spoken dramas, theatre for children, dance, literature, modern circus performances, and music. The theatre also serves as an exhibition space for visual arts, photography, and installations.

The vision of BRUX / Freies Theater is to highlight the breadth and diversity of modern theatrical plays and artistic expressions, as well as to explore and challenge current societal issues and questions. The theatre aims to provide a platform for local, national, and international artists and groups who work in the fields of theatre, dance, performance, and media art. The theatre also strives to foster dialogue and exchange between artists and audiences, as well as to promote cultural education and participation.

One of the most distinctive features of BRUX / Freies Theater is the VORBRENNER, a series of events that showcases especially innovative and transdisciplinary projects and productions. The VORBRENNER, which means “pre-burner” in German, is a metaphor for the experimental and cutting-edge nature of the works presented. The VORBRENNER serves as a development, research, and experimentation center for artists and groups who want to push the boundaries of their artistic practice and explore new forms and formats of expression. The VORBRENNER also offers residencies, workshops, and mentoring programs for emerging and established artists.

BRUX / Freies Theater is supported by the City of Innsbruck and the State of Tyrol, as well as by various sponsors and partners from the cultural, academic, and business sectors. The theatre also relies on the voluntary work and engagement of its members and supporters, who help with the organization, administration, and promotion of the events and activities. The theatre welcomes donations and memberships from anyone who wants to support its mission and vision.
