Bruckner Monument

The Bruckner Monument, located in Vienna’s Stadtpark, is a bronze bust of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896).

The Bruckner bust in Vienna is a re-creation of a sculpture sculpted by Viktor Tilgner for the Bruckner memorial in Steyr in 1898.On October 25, 1899, a year after Bruckner’s death, the Vienna memorial was inaugurated in the Stadtpark. The opening ceremony drew a large number of distinguished visitors.Fritz Zerritsch designed the base.A few years later, the memorial was so badly damaged by vandals that it had to be removed from its original location and temporarily installed in the garden of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Stefan Kameyczky created a new, simpler marble base, and the monument was erected in a revised form in the municipal park in 1988.

Viktor Tilgner’s bronze sculpture depicts an upper body bust. Bruckner takes a little right bend. The first version from 1899 included a half-dressed female figure reaching her hands out towards the composer beneath the sculpture on the marble foundation designed by Fritz Zerritsch.A kithara is next to her.The bust of the upper body sits on a high, flat, and smooth marble pedestal in the restored form, with no further ornamentation.
