The Botanical Garden at the Institute of Plant Sciences at the University of Graz is located in Geidorf, Graz’s third district.
The tropical house, chilly house, tempered house, and succulent house are the new greenhouses that are now in operation.
Originally planned and erected as part of the Joanneum in 1811, the Botanical Garden was relocated to Schubertstraße in 1887.
Volker Giencke won an architectural competition in 1982, which resulted in the new greenhouses. The building process began in 1989. The structure is made up of metal parabolic arches and curved acrylic glass panes. The grand opening occurred on June 25, 1995.
In 1889, work on the first greenhouse began. It was utilized until the new greenhouses opened in 1995; destruction was planned for 1997, but was postponed due to the commitment of a citizens’ initiative. The historic greenhouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2008 and was dormant until 2020.This building will reopen in September 2021 after major renovations.
With the exception of the period from December 24 to January 6, the outdoor area and greenhouses are open to the public via the Schubertstraße entrance. The Botanical Garden and greenhouses are open from 8:00 a.m. to 14:30 p.m. everyday. The garden is open till 16:30 from May 15 to September 15.
