The Bindermichl-Spallerhof landscape park is an 8.3-hectare park in Linz’s Waldegg district, between the boroughs and former statistical districts of Bindermichl and Spallerhof.
The History of the Park
The park, which covers an area of 8.3 hectares, was created in 2006 as a result of a major urban development project: the Bindermichl enclosure on the Mühlkreisautobahn (A7). The A7 is a highway that runs through the city and divides the Waldegg district into two parts: Bindermichl and Spallerhof. These two areas, which have different social and demographic characteristics, were isolated from each other by the noise and pollution of the highway.
The Bindermichl enclosure project aimed to reduce the environmental impact of the highway and improve the quality of life of the residents. The project involved building a tunnel over the highway and creating a landscape park on top of it. The park, which opened on June 30, 2007, was designed by the Austrian landscape architecture firm Auböck + Kárász. The park cost 25 million euros and was funded by the city of Linz, the state of Upper Austria, and the federal government.
The Features of the Park
The park, which has 755 trees, shrubs, and flower beds, is divided into three sections, each with a different theme and function. The southern section of the park is dedicated to children and families. It features a water playground, where kids can play with pumps, locks, and channels, a sandy landscape with various play equipment, and large lawns for picnics and games. The park also has a kindergarten and a youth center.
The middle section of the park is focused on recreation and sports, especially for young people. It offers a variety of facilities, such as soccer and beach volleyball courts, a skate park, a fun court, and a climbing garden. The park also has a pavilion that hosts cultural events and a café that serves snacks and drinks.
The northern section of the park is mainly used for relaxation and wellness, especially for seniors. It provides several sitting options, such as benches, hammocks, and swings, as well as exercise therapy stations for physical and mental health. The park also has a fountain, a pond, and a rose garden.
The Benefits of the Park
The Bindermichl-Spallerhof landscape park is not only a beautiful and diverse green space, but also a social and ecological asset for the city of Linz. The park has improved the air quality, reduced the noise level, and increased the biodiversity of the area. The park has also fostered the social cohesion and integration of the two neighborhoods, by creating a common meeting place and a platform for cultural exchange. The park has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, who enjoy its natural and urban attractions.
The Bindermichl-Spallerhof landscape park is a remarkable example of how urban planning can transform a city and enhance the well-being of its inhabitants. The park is a testament to the vision and collaboration of the city, the state, and the federal authorities, as well as the architects and the residents. The park is a green oasis in the heart of Linz, that offers something for everyone.
